Aquamarine: March Birthstone

With its serene blue tone evoking the tranquility of the sea, aquamarine is the official birthstone for the month of March. Associated for centuries with courage, protection, and emotional renewal, this fascinating gem carries stories that span cultures and generations.

Origin of the name and history

The name "aquamarine" comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning "water of the sea" — a direct reference to its soft, crystalline color. In ancient times, sailors believed the stone was a protective talisman for ocean voyages. In the Middle Ages, aquamarine was believed to strengthen youth, love, and fidelity.

In addition to its beauty, this gem was also used by healers and mystics who saw it as a crystal of purification, ideal for calming nerves and bringing clarity to the mind.

Where it is found

The main aquamarine deposits are located in our Brazil! Especially in Minas Gerais, which is home to some of the largest crystals ever found in the world. There are also important sources in Nigeria, Madagascar, Pakistan, Russia, and the United States.

Meanings and symbolism

As March's birthstone, aquamarine symbolizes serenity, hope, and emotional balance. It is considered a stone that connects the heart to truth, stimulating gentle communication and harmony in relationships. For this reason, it is a frequent choice for engagement jewelry and anniversary gifts.

It is also traditionally associated with the 19th wedding anniversary, making it a highly sought-after jewel for this occasion.

Care and conservation

With a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, aquamarine is relatively durable, suitable for daily wear with proper care. To keep it always sparkling:

  • Avoid impacts or drops that could cause fractures;
  • Store separately from other jewelry to prevent scratches;
  • Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush;
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can affect its color.
