Pearl: June's Birthstone

Origin of the Name and History

The name pearl comes from the Latin perna, initially used to describe the shells that housed these natural gems. Throughout history, pearls have been objects of desire in different cultures: in antiquity, Greeks and Romans believed they were divine gifts, symbols of purity and wisdom. In ancient China, they were associated with wealth and power, worn only by royalty and nobility.

Queens and iconic figures like Cleopatra and Coco Chanel helped perpetuate their fame. Chanel, in particular, popularized pearls in women's fashion by mixing artificial versions with natural gems, highlighting their elegant and timeless charm.

Where it is Found

Pearls can be natural or cultured. Natural pearls, which are rarer, are found spontaneously in oysters, especially in the Persian Gulf, a region famous since ancient times for its natural production.

Today, almost all commercially traded pearls are cultured, produced mainly in Japan, China, Australia, the Philippines, and French Polynesia. Each location offers pearls with unique characteristics:

  • Akoya Pearls (Japan): small, rounded, and very lustrous.

  • Tahitian Pearls (French Polynesia): known for their dark and exotic tones, from gray to deep black.

  • South Sea Pearls (Australia and the Philippines): valued for their larger size and intense luster, appearing in light and golden colors.

  • Freshwater Pearls (China): produced in a wide variety of shapes and colors, offering accessible and versatile options.

Meanings and Symbolism

Pearls symbolize calm, wisdom, discreet elegance, and emotional connection. They are often linked to femininity and delicacy, frequently worn at important events such as weddings or graduations.

Because they are created slowly, layer by layer, they also represent patience, persistence, and emotional resilience. Some cultures attribute calming powers to pearls and the ability to bring emotional balance and inner peace.

Care and Preservation

Pearls require special care because they are sensitive and organic:

  • Avoid direct contact with perfumes, cosmetics, and chemicals. Put on your pearls only after finishing your makeup.

  • Gently clean with a soft, damp cloth after use to remove sweat or oil.

  • Store separately, preferably in a soft fabric, to prevent scratches and preserve their luster.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, which can alter their original color.

With these simple precautions, your pearls will maintain their original beauty for much longer.

Other June Birthstones

In addition to the pearl, June brings two other unique and special gems:

Alexandrite

A rare gemstone that changes color depending on the type of lighting. Originally discovered in Russia, it symbolizes transformation, balance, and luck. It is valued by collectors and admirers of unique jewelry.

Moonstone

Known for its soft and mysterious glow, the moonstone has an almost magical inner luminescence. It is associated with intuition, emotional sensitivity, and new beginnings, bringing a gentle and calming spiritual connection.

Each of these stones brings its particular charm, making June a special time to celebrate the beauty and diversity of natural gems.
